Khayelitsha, South Africa

School in operation

The Khayelitsha School is a completed African Leadership education project serving children in Khayelitsha, South Africa. The school delivers consistent instruction through trained teachers, daily meals, and a safe learning environment that supports attendance, focus, and continuity.

Reliable daytime schooling allows parents, particularly single mothers, to participate in steady work or income-generating activities.

As a school in operation, Khayelitsha functions as a permanent community institution that supports children’s education and strengthens the families who rely on it.

Sustainable fish farming

Empowering communities. Sustaining futures.

In many communities, limited food access and unstable income affect the same households. African Leadership addresses both through sustainable fish farming that strengthens food supply while creating reliable livelihoods.

The program focuses on practical implementation, shared responsibility, and long-term outcomes.

How the program works

African Leadership currently operates four fish farms. Each farm produces approximately five tons of fish per year and generates an average annual income of $15,800.

Each fish pond costs $5,000 to build, stock, and feed in the first year. Participants raise $2,500, and African Leadership matches the remaining amount. This shared-investment approach supports ownership, accountability, and sustainability.

Why fish farming matters

Fish farming increases access to affordable protein while reducing household food costs. Income generated through pond ownership provides families with a predictable source of earnings.

In Madagascar, fish pond operations build on skills gained through construction and entrepreneurship training. These skills are applied directly to fish farming activities, creating a clear pathway from skills development to income generation and food security.

Outcomes and impact

The program contributes to: Improved local food availability | Stable income for participating families | Reduced food costs in surrounding communities | Stronger household economic stability.

Sponsor a fish farm

A contribution of $2,500 sponsors half the cost of a fish pond. African Leadership matches each contribution to fully fund the project.

Women’s entrepreneurship class

From survival to success

African Leadership supports entrepreneurship as a pathway to financial independence. The program helps parents, particularly women, start and grow small businesses that generate reliable income.

What the program provides

Training focuses on: Business planning and pricing | Financial literacy and record keeping | Market identification and customer access.

Why this program matters

Women are often primary caregivers and income earners within their households. This entrepreneurship class enables women to build income streams they control, increasing financial security and reducing reliance on unstable or low-wage work.

Support the women’s entrepreneurship program

Donations fund training materials, instructors, and program delivery. Contributions expand access to entrepreneurship training for more women seeking reliable income.

Schools in progress

Expanding access to education

African Leadership continues building new schools in communities where access to reliable education remains limited. These projects are designed to create safe, permanent learning environments that support consistent attendance and long-term educational continuity.

Once completed, each school will provide consistent classroom teaching led by trained teachers and reliable daytime care. This enables families, particularly working parents, to rely on stable schooling while supporting children’s learning and development.

Current status

Construction is progressing in planned phases, including site preparation, classroom development, and essential infrastructure.

Skills and Training Center

Practical skills for work

African Leadership is developing a Skills and Training Center to strengthen access to practical skills that support income generation and household stability. The center formalizes construction training already underway and introduces new vocational programs.

Construction skills training

Participants are currently engaged in brick making and basic house construction through active building projects. The skills gained through this training are now being applied directly to the construction of the new vocational training center.

Training focuses on practical, hands-on work that supports paid employment while contributing to community infrastructure.

Vocational training programs

Phase one will support: Woodcrafting and carpentry | Sewing and tailoring.

Construction progress

Current work includes plastering window sills and door frames, floor topping, and preparation for electrical installation. Burglar bars and roller shutter doors will follow.

Phase one will be ready for use once these works are completed.
